A spinet is roughly 300 pounds and an upright can pass 800. A grand has to come off its legs and go on its side onto a board before it goes anywhere. The weight is not really the problem — the problem is that the weight is high, uneven, and attached to a soundboard that a single hard set-down will crack. We have been moving these since 1985 and we own the boards, the skids, the ramps and the trucks that make it routine.

How it actually goes

We ask specific questions
Upright or grand, and roughly what model. How many steps at each end, and whether there is a turn on the stairs. How wide the front door is. Where the truck can park. Those answers decide the crew and the gear.

The right equipment comes out
Piano board, skid board, four-wheel dollies, ramps, straps and padding. This is the part that separates a piano mover from three strong people and a rented truck.

Wrap before it moves
The instrument is fully padded and strapped before it leaves the room. On a grand, the lid is secured, the lyre and legs come off, and it goes onto the board on its side.

Route it, do not muscle it
Doorways measured, corners planned, banisters padded. Nearly every piano injury and every piece of damaged trim comes from improvising a route at the last second.

Set and place
Legs and lyre back on, positioned where you want it in the new room, on the pads or casters it belongs on.

How much does it cost to move a piano?
Standalone piano moves are flat-quoted from the type of piano and the access at both ends. An upright going ground floor to ground floor is at the low end; a grand with a flight of stairs on both ends is at the high end. Tell us the model and the stairs and we can price it on the phone.
Will my piano need tuning afterward?
Almost certainly, and that is normal for any piano that moves — it is the change in humidity and position, not rough handling. Let it settle in the new room for a couple of weeks before you have it tuned.
Can you get a grand piano down a staircase?
In most cases yes, with the legs and lyre off and the instrument on a board. What we need to know first is the stair width, whether there is a turn or a landing, and the banister situation. Send photos and we will tell you honestly if it is a problem.
Do you move hot tubs?
Yes. Hot tubs need to be drained and fully dry beforehand, and we need to know the route — side gates, slopes and fence widths decide whether it is a four-person carry or a crane job. Very occasionally it is a crane job, and we will say so rather than find out on the day.
Do you move gun safes?
Yes, including large safes on stairs. Empty the safe first and have the combination or key with you. Weight and stair count decide the crew size.
Can you move just the piano, without a whole move?
Yes, that is a large share of what this division does — piano-only moves across town, between family members, or into a church or school.
